Net Billing

Net Billing is an energy offsetting system that allows consumers to generate their own electricity from renewable sources, such as photovoltaic systems, and use it for their energy needs.

The energy that is not directly consumed is sent to the grid and credited to the consumer's bill.

The basic idea of Net Billing is to compensate the producer-consumer for the energy it supplies to the grid.

Power Generation through Photovoltaic Systems: The consumer installs a photovoltaic system, which generates electricity. The consumer installs a photovoltaic system that generates electricity.

Direct Self-Consumption: The energy produced is directly consumed to meet the energy needs of the space. If the energy produced is equal to or greater than the consumption at that moment, there is no need to draw energy from the grid, so the consumer does not pay for the use of energy from their provider.

Surplus Energy: At times when the energy production from the photovoltaic system exceeds the direct consumption, the surplus energy is fed into the grid.

Compensation for Surplus Energy: Energy delivered to the grid is priced based on the current wholesale price of electricity. That is, the consumer receives compensation for the energy supplied to the grid, which can be used to reduce the cost of energy consumed when the system is not generating (e.g. at night or when weather conditions do not allow for generation).

Consumption of energy from the grid: When the production of the PV system is not sufficient to meet the energy demand (e.g. at night or on days with low sunshine), the consumer draws energy from the grid. This consumption is recorded and invoiced according to current retail energy prices.

The integration of energy storage batteries into Net Billing systems maximizes the benefits of self-generation. Excess energy is stored for future use, reducing the need for grid energy consumption and enhancing energy autonomy. The combination of PV and batteries under Net Billing enables the consumer to avoid selling excess energy to the grid at a low price and to use the stored energy when market prices are higher or during periods when self-generation is not sufficient.

The main advantages include:

  • Energy storage for use during non-productive hours (e.g. at night).

  •  Reducing energy costs: Minimize the need to purchase energy from the grid during peak hours.

Virtual Net Billing provides even more flexibility by allowing energy to be generated at a different location from that of consumption. It is suitable for consumers who cannot install PV at their main site, such as:

  • Residential consumers in apartment buildings

  • Enterprises with branches in different geographical locations

  • Farmers with energy production facilities outside their main holdings.

Through Virtual Net Billing, the energy generated can be fed into the grid from any location and offset against the energy consumed at another site. This allows for greater freedom in the design and deployment of energy solutions.

Net Billing offers significant benefits to consumers:

  • Reduction of energy costs: Offsetting the energy produced reduces the final electricity bill.

  • Increased energy autonomy: Reduced dependence on the grid and fluctuations in energy prices.

  • Sustainable development: The use of renewable energy sources is enhanced, helping to reduce carbon emissions.

Net Billing is aimed at consumers with high energy needs, such as:

  • Businesses and industries: To meet large energy needs, reducing operating costs through self-generation.

  • Residential consumers: Ideal for homes with high energy requirements or for those who wish to reduce electricity costs.

  • Public bodies and organisations: Hospitals, schools and municipal organisations can benefit from reducing their energy costs.

  • Energy communities: Groups of citizens or organisations that wish to share the benefits of self-generation and energy offsetting.
